Hey There,
You cannot feel faith and fear in your body simultaneously. It is physically impossible.
Your nervous system has two states relevant here. Sympathetic — fight, flight, danger — and parasympathetic — safety, rest, trust. They are mutually exclusive in their dominant expression. Which means when you say you trust God while your shoulders are up around your ears and you have not slept through the night in weeks, that is not faith with some fear mixed in. That is fear, wearing church clothes, that has gotten very good at sounding spiritual.
I went all the way in on this today. The physiology of why your body cannot run both states at once and what is actually happening every time you replay a catastrophic scenario in your head. The radio station analogy — two frequencies, one dial, and which station you have had parked there out of habit for years. How the news media and the wellness industry and certain corners of the church all profit from keeping you tuned to fear. The woman whose doctor told her flatly that her body had been in chronic fight or flight for years, despite a lifetime of deep spiritual practice, because nobody had ever separated the two for her. And Jesus asleep in the boat during the storm — the question he asked the disciples that is the entire point of this episode. Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?
The storm might be completely real. The question is whether you remember who is in the boat with you.
Go listen. Then notice the next moment your words say faith and your body says fear.
